As a dog photographer in Chicago, I couldn’t have been more thrilled to receive an email inquiry to photograph two of the most adorable puppies. These delightful pups were adopted brothers, soon to be immortalized through a series of heartwarming images that capture their unique personalities and the bond they share with their new owners, who are close friends.

For this memorable session, we chose a serene park in north Chicago, where we found an open, quiet space to begin our photography adventure. Our goal was to capture a variety of images, including shots of each dog with their respective owners and some of the puppies individually.

We started the session with cautious optimism, keeping the dogs on leashes and generously rewarding them with treats. This allowed the puppies to become comfortable with me and engage in a bit of play. Known for their exuberance, these two lively pups regularly enjoy each other’s company, and they certainly had a lot of energy to expend.

Though it happened to be the hottest day of the year, the sweltering temperatures didn’t dampen their spirits—or the session. With tongues out to combat the heat, the dogs gave their all for the camera, resulting in some truly amazing photos.

Post-processing involved editing out the leashes where possible, transforming some images into leash-free portraits. As the dogs began to tire, I ventured closer, capturing candid moments with just a few more treats to keep them engaged. A trusty squeaky toy helped to focus their attention, allowing us to snap a few solo shots of the puppies before incorporating their owners into the frame.

Zoom lens for puppies on the move!

For most of the session, I relied on a versatile 70-200 mm lens, which allowed me to maintain a respectful distance as a newcomer to the dogs. This lens was perfect for adapting to the pups’ quick movements. Later, I switched to a wider lens for more intimate shots, earning a few face licks and snuggles in return—perhaps they could smell my own dog on me from our morning walk.

I’m incredibly pleased we opted for an outdoor session; these energetic pups thrived in the open space, far better than they would have in a studio setting. Although, I must admit, I did long for the air conditioning!
