Colleen & John’s Journeyman Wedding in Valpo

Welcome to another cool Journeyman Wedding in Valparaiso.

Few venues in North west Indiana offer so many fun spaces to work with. Colleen and her bridesmaids arrived early in the day to start getting ready. I joined them at about 10:00 a.m.

I made a huge shift in my wedding coverage over the last few years. I stopped doing 6 and 8 hour packages and went to all day coverage until 10:00 p.m.

The main reason for this change is to allow time for all these detail photos without rushing the wedding day.

I knew I wanted to hang Colleens dress in the rustic reception space as soon as I walked in.

Reflections and Bokeh at this Journeyman Wedding

Reflections are always fun when capturing details. The string lights were so awesome in the background with a wide aperture on an 85 mm lens.

The Photo Booth space downstairs is always a fun place for portraits.

We had enough time to throw up a blue and a red Gell to match to colors in the room and create a fun shot of John before we went outside to capture the guys.

I love the MagMod system for these photos. It’s small, portable and very quick to deploy on wedding day.

I used four Canon El-5 flashes here. One each side with the gels and a grid to control spill and then two flashes in a 24 inch soft box with a grid as well.

I left the lights here while we went outside so I could capture Colleen and John here together after their fist look. Again an advantage of starting early, I had all the time and open space to do this without guests around yet.

Journeyman Wedding First Look

During their first look I noticed the moms were on the other side of the big windows. I just had to capture their emotional responses.

I carry two cameras on me most of the day at weddings for moments just like this. I could swap over to my longer lens and capture the shot of the moms and then snap right back to Colleen and John without missing any moments.

I lost count of how many happy tear photos we got at this wedding.

Every wedding has a character!  (or two or three haha)

If I have not found the fun folks at a wedding by the time the reception starts, I will by the time the open bar is rocking haha.
