Seven Minute Sunset Wedding Photos

 

 

A few weeks ago I photographed Danielle and Mason’s Bolingbrook Golf Club Wedding.

It was a warm summer day and we had incredible weather.

Their ceremony was at a Catholic Church, and the reception was at Bolingbrook Golf Club.

 

Early in the planning talks we had for this wedding, the bride and groom had mentioned they really wanted to get sunset photos.

As soon as I arrived at the venue for the wedding reception, I scouted out a few good spots where we could do some sunset photos.

I was so excited about the open areas and the clock tower right out front from the reception banquet room.

 

I knew that I could maximize the sky and the color with a low angle and the couple on the crest of the raised hills by the clock tower.

The open space just behind the clock tower was another awesome spot for sunset and really close by.

While finding a space for great sunsets is typically the hard part, at this Bolingbrook Golf Club Wedding it was really easy.

The hard part was the juggle between timelines and creativity. Every wedding has a slightly different timeline. Sunset also varies at every wedding depending on the time of year.

Sunset was set to be at about 8:15 p.m. This was great, except this was right when the dance floor was due to open up.

 

The workaround for an8:00 p.m. dance floor opening and an 8:15 sunset was pretty easy thankfully.

 

I decided we would work on going out at 7:45 and I would underexpose the sky and add a little extra  light off camera to pull in as much color as we could before sunset.

We were on a time crunch, so I went outside five minutes before the couple and set up two Canon speed lights with grids. I got my light dialed in with the awesome videographer acting as my test subject.

This meant that when my bride and groom walked out, from start to finish they were there seven minutes. Yes seven minutes. WE took all these awesome sunset photos in seven minutes and they walked back into the reception right on time for the DJ to open the dance floor.

 

Seven Minutes of Creativity!

 

 

 

Because I used two very portable Canon speed lights for the sunset, I was able to simply walk back in with them, throw the tungsten gel filters back on them and I was ready for dancing in under 30 seconds.
